Ted Larsen, Lady Man, 2018. |
Ted Larsen, based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has a BA from Northern Arizona University and is an internationally exhibiting artist and a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work is in numerous collections, including The New Mexico Museum of Art, The Palm Springs Art Museum, and major corporations such as Proctor & Gamble and PepsiCo. His work comments on minimalist ideas and "High Art" practice, often challenging conventional artistic hierarchies with a studio practice that favors spontaneity and experimentation. He has a well-developed process using surfaces made from pre-painted salvage materials, mostly car body parts. With these "non-art materials," he forms "Shaped Paintings," hybrid objects with obvious sculptural qualities that push the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Larsen's goal is to challenge perceptions and redefine value by reusing discarded materials, giving them new meaning and elevating them to fine art, questioning material hierarchies and artistic boundaries. His process of deconstruction and reconstruction reflects an inquiry into transformation and finding beauty in the overlooked, as he says on his personal website, "Purity comes from distillation. Through a process of removal, things become more clear. What is removed can be as important as what remains." Through his work, Larsen shows that artistic expression is not limited by traditional mediums, but can emerge from unexpected sources, increasing appreciation for the inherent beauty in marginalized objects.
The artist biographies for Witness Nothing were collaboratively written by curatorial interns Julyet Carillo and Elisa Leyva, with the oversight of Henry Schulte Assistant Curator of Practice. The content was compiled from a variety of sources, including personal websites, institutional biographies, critical essays, artist interviews, and exhibition texts. A comprehensive bibliography of all sources used is provided below. It is important to note that Gemini, a Google AI, was utilized in the editing process to condense and refine the initial drafts into more concise paragraphs, using the prompt: "Use the following information to shorten each artist bio to one paragraph.”
